During the waiting period, it’s only natural to get your hopes up, so it’s always disappointing to receive the news you weren’t selected. Initially, you might feel like the process was a waste of time, but in reality, it’s anything but that. Every job interview is a learning experience, especially when you request feedback from your recruiter. If you’re a little shy, this might feel intimidating, but you won’t regret it. Follow these tips to ask your recruiter for valuable post-interview feedback. #### **Be Prompt** If you drag your feet asking for feedback, the responses you receive might not be monumentally helpful. Your recruiter wants to help you succeed, but they have a lot on their plate. The longer you wait, the less likely they’ll be able to remember specific comments they received on your interview —if they were given any information at all. It’s also very possible they’ll have to reach out to the company to get feedback, so on the same note, if you wait several weeks, the hiring manager’s memories of your interview won’t be as fresh. #### **Focus on the Future** Your job interview is history, so there’s no point in dwelling on it. Instead of asking for a list of questions framed around what you might’ve done wrong, concentrate on ways you can improve. The advice you receive can increase your chances of getting hired next time around, and you might find that job is a better fit. #### **Maintain a Positive Attitude** Just because you didn’t get hired this time, doesn’t mean the hiring manager wasn’t impressed with you. When the first-choice candidate doesn’t work out or another position comes available, it’s not uncommon for companies to reach out to great candidates they’ve already interviewed. If you say negative things about the job or the organization, your recruiter will be hesitant to put you back in contact with the hiring manager. This could also cause them to worry about your disposition in general, as rejection is just another part of the job search.
